The Nimzo-Indian defence is one of the more popularized openings believed to have originated in a match between Englisch vs. Blackburne, (source: chessgames.com). It is characterized by the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4.

It is generally considered to put black on the offensive position and white on the defensive position through the start of the game.
