Amazing tactic in a custom position game!
I would like to share this custom position game with you all due to an amazing tactic I saw in the game. This game came from a custom position tournament where black's pieces start 2 ranks forward and white has a bunch of queens behind pawns that cannot move on the back 2 ranks to block off the ranks. Since the back 2 ranks are blocked off, white cannot promote pawns but white can move pawns 2 squares in the opening and castle while black cannot, but black is able to promote pawns.
In one of my games that recently finished, I was able to spot a cool tactic that I want to share with everyone. Unfortunately, my opponent resigned before the tactic could play out. My opponent's queen appeared to be trapped on move 14 and if they took my bishop (Qxc5), it looked like I would take the queen with my pawn (dxc5). But my opponent would have Bxc3 and win back my queen. Surprisingly, I would not need to play dxc5 due to the tactic I saw. Try to find the winning combination for white when black tries to save the queen:
And white wins since white threatens mate on e6 and if black moves the g6 knight so that the rook protects e6, white checkmates on e5. Here is the full analysis of the tactical combination and alternatives:
Hope you enjoyed!
