Can You Defeat GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov?
Everyone wants to win a game against a grandmaster, but do you have a chance if you are an amateur or young player? Yes, you do. A simultaneous is your chance against a grandmaster! A titled player plays against numerous players at the same time.
It is complete mind-numbing torture to keep track of all games and ideas in them, focusing on all the games at the same level. It is really not easy and often even top grandmasters make very easy mistakes or blunders in those games. Just look at these examples from former World Champion Anatoly Karpov’s game.
Would Karpov miss this simple fork in a regular game? Never.
I remember my own experience of giving a simul back in 2010 in Colombia University, New York to college students on 40 boards. I walked around all the boards and made my moves. Nobody notated games, and two boys, friends, decided to check on me to see how is it possible for a grandmaster to remember all boards and keep track of all pieces on those boards. They decided to steal my pawn in the game since were not really expecting me to remember the position. Once I returned back to that particular board, I noticed something is wrong and realized that my pawn is not on the board and kindly asked the opponent to put it back. Guess what, player stood up and shook my hand with a surprised face. After the simul ended, he could not imagine how I could keep track of all games and pieces on the board. I did not know what to answer. Probably it is just very natural to us grandmasters.
Dear friends, on May 3, 2020, top grandmaster, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, will give a simul on Chess.com to 20 players. Do not miss your chance to defeat this top grandmaster and write your name in chess history.
