Now Don Quixote. I read it in Spanish when I lived in El Salvador. I was seven years old interned in a Catholic school. I picked the book. It was not a required read.

My mom would sit while I read the book outloud and both would start laughing at the antics of Don Quixote. I loved the characters, amazed at the style of writing, fantasized in my mind, laughed so loud I was told to stop reading near anyone. In the second half of the book I got so lost, so bored I stopped reading it.

Now when living in the USA I picked up the book again but still do not make it past the middle of the book. I totally dislike the second half. I have tried various translation of it and have not had any success with the second half.

Since my love of Don Quixote every time a movie comes out I run hoping that the actor that plays Don Quixote will be the best one to do so. Everytime I have been dissapointed. I don't care who plays Sancho Pansa. The movie that I had built in my mind never comes alive for me.

The best portrayal of Don Quixote was by the father in  the TV show "Third Rock From the Sun."

John Lithman . . . . something.

In my home I have a mounted painting that shows just the shadows of Don Quixote mounted on a skinny nag, with raggedy armour and a pan for a helmet. Next to him is a round fat short man mounted some sort of donkey. I just love that piece.

                        (sigh)

I have two different versions of Don Quixote in my library. I just love half of that book. I feel that one day I would just rip away the second and make my own ending for the book. Giving myself literary license to do so would finally give me the joy of having finished it.

I am going to copy it and put it in my memoirs. . .
