Philidor's ending is a very important ending you need to know, and today I'm going to show you Philidor's position (or ending). (This study was developed by François-André Danican Philidor in 1777.)

Look at the diagram of the Final of Philidor:

If you don't know the ending it can be scary, because black has an extra pawn.

But don't worry, now let's learn how to tie White's position.

Note that black's only way to evolve is by passing the king, but he can't do that, as the white rook cuts through the king.

So, for White to tie, they need to leave the rook on the third row.

The Rb3 move is great, as it takes its turn cutting the king:

Black can't evolve, they'll just have to pass the moves.

-But wait a second!!! And if black moves the pawn?????

You throw the tower up there. (Example: Ra8)

White's plan is simple: give infinite checks and annoy the black player.

And black can't help it.

As you can see, Black tried to take the king to the rook, but the pawn was left unprotected.

And that was the end of Phili...

-But what if Black plays Th5 to cover the checks?????

It's still a tied ending!

Hope I helped you!
