The Halloween Gambit is one of the wildest and most playful openings in chess. 🎃

It begins from the Four Knights Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6), and then—suddenly—the White player does something shocking: 4.Nxe5!? sacrificing a knight right in the center of the board.

Why would anyone do that? Because the idea is bold and beautiful: White gives up a knight to chase away Black’s central pieces with pawns (d4 and e5), grabbing huge space and starting a fierce attack. It may not be “sound” at grandmaster level, but in practical play it’s terrifying—especially if your opponent has never seen it before.

It’s called the Halloween Gambit for a reason: it’s like a jump scare! Your rival thinks they’re playing a calm, classical opening… and suddenly a knight disappears, and the board turns into a haunted battlefield.
