The Power of Pawn Storms

In all my chess experience, I have seen that pawn storms are effective, whether I am using them or my opponent is using them against me. When I first began playing chess, I didn't get it. Pawns? They are worth 1 point each and cover two squares on the board! How could they possibly help secure a victory? In the following games I will attempt to demonstrate the value of pawn storms and how they can be pulled off effectively and to your advantage.

With a rating that is average, I obviously did not make perfect moves throughout this game. However, the value of the pawn storm can be seen here. After safely queen-side castling my king, I was ready to start going on the offensive. With all of my pieces relatively stuck, and his king castled in front of my rook, a pawn storm was a great option. By pushing my 'G' pawn, I was able to put pressure on his castled king, which did not have many pieces supporting it. I also had my rook ready to move behind the pawn at a moment's notice if necessary, supporting it and creating the possibility for a discovered check or pin.
Once again, after my opponent castled, in this case manually, I, with my king protected, saw fit to advance my pawns, in this case with the help of my knight, and to destroy his protection. This lead me to have plenty of checks and blow open his position.
Here the pawn storm helped me set up a pin on his king, enabling me to decimate his defense and to eventually get a mate.
Despite this game being shorter, By pushing my pawns I was able to attack his castled king and to force a mate.

Overall, it is good to pawn storm if:

  • The opponent's king is castled
  • Your king is in a safe position
  • Your other pieces are safe and do not have very good attacks
  • You have a rook supporting you pawns
