Hello dear chess lovers, lets go through one of the most beautiful checkmate patterns named just as beautiful as the pattern "Anastasia's mate".The name actually came from a book "Anastasia and the game of chess" by a German writer called Johann Jakob Wilhelm Heinse. Now let's get introduced to the pattern ..

Position- 1 Back to move

This is an ideal position for Anastasia's mate. You can see after the knight can jump to e2 square it forces the black king to h1 aquare and takes away the g1 & g3 squares from the king .And g2 square is blocked by a pawn.So black can sac a rook even a queen to h2 square and bring another rok to open h file and provide check-mate pattern named Anastasia mate.

Lets look at some other positions and try to understand the pattern:

Position 2:  Vidmar vs Max Euwe,1929 ,White to move(Try solving without seeing the moves)

Let's try to understand the position, after Re8, Bf8 is almost forced as Kh7 leads to Qd3+ losing the black rook on c2.But after Bf8 white has the beautiful idea of checkmating black with anastasia mating pattern, because if white rook takes the bishop and black king takes back, white knight goes to f5 giving a discovered check and creating anastasia's mating attack.Kg8 and Qf8 !!

Position 3: C Golmayo vs Sam Loyd ,1867 ,Black to move(Try to solve without seeing answer)

This one is a bit tough, but you should try it,its fun.In case you cannot solve it,the solution is given below(Try to solve before seeing the answer)-

position 4: Kavalek vs Khodos,1965.White to move,mate in 4.

After going through these 3 positions, you should have a firm grip on Anastasia's mate.So lets try to solve some puzzles! All puzzles are from real games that happened on boards.

Puzzle 1: Conrad Bayer vs Erst Falkbeer,1852,vienna. Black to move

Puzzle 2:  Philip Viner vs D Carrey,1961.Australia, white to move

Puzzle 3 : Peter Roth vs George Rajna,Hungary,1975,White to move

Puzzle 4 : Ludvig Hammer vs Magnus Carlsen,Helsinki,2003,Black to move

Puzzle 5: Owen vs Burn,Casual game,Liverpool,1875,Black to move

Hope you enjoyed it .You can comment and share the post.Thank you.
