Welcome everybody, to another excruciating edition of Blitz 'n' Memes.

If you're a fan of puzzles taken from amateur online blitz tournaments, then you have come to the right place, because that is what I do.

As always, the tactics have been selected from the Japan Chess Federation's monthly blitz tournament: TGIF Blitz. The tourney takes place on the 3rd Friday of every month, 21:00 JST, right here on chess.com. It consists of seven rounds of blitz, with a time control of 3+2; and is open to all JCF club members.

The memes on the other hand, were handpicked from the seediest corners of the InterWebs...

This month's offerings are a great mix of simple, intermediate and advanced tactics (something for everyone), but it will not be easy to get all 5 puzzles correct on the first attempt.

So, without further ado, lets get to the Blitz 'n' Memes...

Congrats to Magnus...and Nepo...

Horsing Around

Our first puzzle is conveniently from the first round, yycy24, playing White, is able to win material by playing the only good move in the position.

Can you take advantage of Black's "horseplay"?

My love life...

Hanging in the Balance

Our next puzzle is from the 4th round, drsljones, playing Black, is able to win a pawn and take over the initiative with this tactic.

Winning the pawn is straight forward, but careful...White has some dangerous counterplay.

Accurate.

Gaining Some Time

In the 2nd round IM rnanjo, playing White, is able to gain a little time by playing a bullying move.

A gain of time and patience lead to a gain of material.

Uhhh?!

Quadruple Exclam!!!!

In the 6th round IM rnanjo, playing White, pulled of a two brilliant moves to win finish an unstoppable attack.

Can you play the vaunted Quadruple Exclam?

Wait...What?!

Brilliant vs Brilliancy

Our final tactic is from the 2nd round, Zucci, playing Black, demonstrates how to respond to multiple brilliant moves.

Take your time, this one takes some calculation. Good Luck!

And that was it, that was January Blitz 'n' Memes.

Congratulations to IM rnanjo for winning with a perfect 7/7 score. And more importantly, congratulations to you few puzzle warriors who attained the vaunted 5/5 score.

As always, thanks for reading and feel free to share these puzzles with your friends down at the library or office.

cheers, SheldonOfOsaka.
