May's Blitz 'n' Memes: Championship Edition
Welcome everybody, to a special Championship edition of Blitz 'n' Memes...
If you're a fan of puzzles taken from amateur chess tournaments, then you have come to the right place, because that is what I do.
A special treat this month, as our tactics are drawn from the Japan Chess Championship 2026 - the 27th Argentina Cup, which took place earlier this month, May 2nd - May 6th, in Tokyo, Japan.
The memes on the other hand, were found in the depths of the InterWebs...
There is no doubt about it, we have some difficult tactics here, so I will do my best to give hints. It will take something special to solve all 5 puzzles on the first go round. Good Luck!!
So without further ado, let's get to the Blitz 'n' Memes.
Job Promotion
Our first tactic comes from round 7 - board 2, CM Kan Nakahara, playing White, attains promotion for his f-pawn, starting with a forcing move.
White has a far more active king, if he can get rid of a key defender promotion is guaranteed.
Break on through to the other side
Our next tactic is from round 1 - board 3, IM Shinya Kojima, playing White, is able shatter his opponents defenses with a brutal sacrifice.
First things first, defend against that mate threat on h1, then find a way to attack the weak pawn on c6.
A Disconnected Line
Moving on to round 9 - board 3, FM Shou Otsuka, playing Black, disrupts White's piece coordination with a clever tactic.
Black has a lot of pressure coming down the c-file, if only there was a way to open the file immediately...
Threat After Threat
We venture on to round 3 - board 6, IM Tranh Tu Tran, playing White, turns a slight advantage into a winning position by making threat after threat.
Black's pieces are uncoordinated, his bishops are misplaced and the light one blocks the connection of the rooks, most importantly, the queen can be attacked with a gain of time. This puzzle is interesting in that material will remain equal, yet White's position is totally winning.
Offense Over Everything
Our final tactic is from round 5 - board 2, another beauty from IM Thanh Tu Tran, playing White, he shows that the best defense is a great offense.
Best of luck with this one.
And that was it, that was Blitz 'n' Memes: Championship Edition.
Congrats to CM Kan Nakahara for winning the Japan Chess Championship 2026 - The 27th Argentina Cup, with a 7.5 out of 9 score. And of course congratulations to you few puzzle fanatics who were able to get 5/5 on the first attempt, you are the best of us.
