10 Rare checkmates that I like
Welcome to my blog. Today I will talk about 10 rare checkmates that can happen in the history. There will be puzzles at the end to test your eyes and brain.
I have divided this blog into three classes - well known, rare but hardly easy, absolutely difficult like very rarely seen. The checkmates are arranged according to their classes.
- Fool's mate
- Legal's mate
- King checkmate
- En-passent checkmate
- Castle checkmate
- Two bishop checkmate
- Bishop and knight checkmate
- Two knight checkmate
- Reset checkmate
- ********************************* checkmate
Puzzles and conclusion
Fool's mate
A fool's mate is the shortest possible checkmate made by black only in 2 moves. This checkmate pattern often requires you being black and white to push f- and g-pawns.
Here's all the PGNs of possible fool's mate patterns.

Legal's mate
It is a fast checkmate, often results as the result of legal's trap. It is done in 8 moves if you want a brilliant move otherwise 7 moves.
Next topics will have a key strategy, telling us what to do to achieve this checkmate.
King checkmate
Have you seen a king, attacking another king? If not, today, you'll see the king checkmate. Some people have a killer King award for achieving this checkmate.
This will show us how pro Uno-reversed the fork.
Key strategy for king checkmate
This is what I did against Martin.
If we have two rooks and a king on the board and our opponent has only the king, we must keep a rook on the file below our king and the king in front of another king and give checks like this.
En-passent checkmate
An en-passent is a rare move that occurs when a pawn jumps two squares forward and lands beside its opponent's pawn. If it results in a checkmate, we call it as en-passent checkmate, which surprised Levy.
Key strategy for en-passent checkmate
Check out this game.
If you had fun, let me tell you that en-passent checkmate is possible when the king is in a mating net and bishop x-ray attacking the king with pawn giving discovered check, forcing our opponent to hang a pawn by en-passent.
Castle checkmate
Have you seen a checkmate done by castling? If not, you have an achievement for this - castle victory. You can get it if you can castle.
Key strategy for castle checkmate
In the middlegame, keep your king safe in the centre and don't move your king or rook, then if you have another rook and queen, you can move the one which you don't need for checkmating. Suppose you want a kingside castle checkmate. You can move the queenside pieces and trap the opponents King on the f-file without moving your king and kingside rook. Then castle. This is the strategy to follow.
Follow this strategy if you want queenside castle checkmate.
Two bishop checkmate
A bishop pair is dangerous in the middlegame and it can be sometimes in the endgame. This is a rare checkmate because when I faced this situation, I got stalemated.
Key strategy for two bishop checkmate
Trap the king in a bishop pair box and follow the strategy given below.
Bishop and knight checkmate
You know what to do when you have two bishops fighting against a king just now but do you know what to do when you have a bishop and knight fighting against a king? If not, let me show you this checkmate gif.
Key strategy for bishop and knight checkmate
Check out this game to find out knight's movement.
and check out the colour of the bishop - find out the correct corner to checkmate the king.
And follow this strategy.
Two knight checkmate
Have you heard about checkmate with two knights? If yes, it might look impossible as it leads to a stalemate, so I will include an opponent's pawn to give an extra tempo.
Key strategy for this checkmate
The Troisky line tells us the position of opponent's pawn.
Now, follow this strategy.
Moving onto the last tier - the red tier
The reset checkmate
Have you seen a checkmate with pieces on starting position? If not, let me tell you that it exists. We just need critical thinking about pawns and pieces.
Key strategy for reset checkmate
First, checkmate out this checkmate.
Now, this is the material count and pawns to promote and sacrifice
Now, follow this strategy.
The DOUBLY DISAMBIGUATED BISHOP CAPTURE CHECKMATE
this is the rarest checkmate that happens 1 in 342,000,000,000 games of chess. It often includes three bishops in L shape of same colour, pointing the pawn on same colour with king in diagonal touch to that pawn in a mating net.
Key strategy for doubly disambiguated bishop capture checkmate
First, you will have to blockade the pawn. Then, save three pawns that promote on the colour of the opponent's blockaded pawn or a bishop of that colour. Save pieces for mating net (such as a queen).
The hardest part comes now. After the promotions, make sure the king is in diagonal to the pawn in the final position and please don't stalemate the king.
Use this strategy.
