For the seventh episode of the #AskAChessMaster show, the question given was,

"How bad are double pawn structures?"

This is an important answer to be addressed, and I would like to thank user Mahee_Islam for such a great question.

Double pawns, contrary to popular belief, are not always bad. Like most things in life, whether it be chocolate cake or baloney sandwiches, or Hawaiian pizza, there are pros and there can be cons of every single thing.

Double pawns in a vacuum are not necessarily bad. They can be, but they can also not be.

In the position above, it is obvious that the double pawns are bad, they cannot protect each other, and they cannot move easily, all things that allow black to have a very comfortable, and easy position to win.

On the other hand, even though in this position, white has double pawns, his position is considerably better than black... despite the double pawns! How is this the case?

It is important to note that in the first position, the pawns being doubled were not the reason why white was considerably worse. Once one gets that out of their mind, it's simple to understand why in both positions, despite white having double pawns in both; in one, white is better, and the other, white is substantially worse.

In the first position, the problem wasn't necessarily the double pawns, but the "isolated pawns", something that white does not have in the second position. An isolated pawn is a pawn that has no pawn to support them. In the first position, every pawn is an isolated pawn which makes white have an incredibly terrible position.

In conclusion, it is important to ask oneself why different things are considered bad. If one does, they can greatly improve their chess skills by understand and progressing through these reasons.

Double pawns CAN be bad, if they are isolated and weak but they can also NOT be bad if they are connected and strong.
