It's the second episode of the #AskAChessMaster show, where you ask your chess questions, and I answer them.

Today's question comes from TaylorD as his question was, "I have trouble winning won games at my level. How would you suggest I improve at this?"

This is an excellent question, thank you TaylorD and it is a problem I see so much at the beginner and intermediate levels. I mean, how many games have I seen in which one side is up a piece, a few pawns and still manages to lose? Too many, too many indeed.

So what is my answer to this question? It's quite simple. I have two simple steps that anyone can follow to ensure that they win the games that they should by all means win.

These two simple steps are,

1. Trade Pieces

2. Promote a pawn

It's really that simple. Once  you are up material, even if it's just a piece, a good strategy to almost always ensure a win against an opponent at relatively the same level as you is to trade pieces (the less pieces you have, the less likely your opponent can pull anything tricky) and once you do, it'll be hard for them to stop your promotion, which you will promptly do.

Know what's better than one queen? Two or more.

The following video is one I made highlighting these two steps while providing a case example to show you guys how to follow these steps. Do consider watching.
