Some of his main reason for quitting was beacuse during the mid - 19th century , professional chess players were often refered as gamblers or card sharps . Being from a wealthy , prominent New Orleans family , he was always expected to pursue a serious and respectable career like law. Also after dominating both American and Europe masters , he felt chess quite boring as there was no one to challenge his superiority and there was no challenges left for him in the chess world . He even offered " Pawn and move " odds to future challengers to reflect his perceived superior category of play , which professional refused to accept . He was also particularly frustated by Howard Staunton's repeated avoidance of a arranged match , which contributed to his disillusionment with top-level competition .
