And then utterly devastates Keres, who made it a point to get revenge against Makogonov after losing to him in 1939.

In the 1940 championship, Makogonov managed to beat Keres, Botvinnik and Smyslov - he was the only one who accomplished that feat. But he lost to several weaker players and only shared 7th place, narrowly missing the 1941 "Superfinal tournament".

In 1942, Makogonov played a match against Flohr and won.
