Part 1 : Europea

The biggest reason why chess has become widespread in Europe is that it is a game based on intelligence.

The game's popularity grew further with the patronage of European nobility and royal courts. Kings and rulers often flaunted their wealth and power by promoting chess as a major pastime in their palaces. Therefore, chess tournaments and matches have become important social events attracting spectators and participants from different lifestyles. Royal approval of chess helped establish it as a respectable activity and encouraged its spread across the European continent. The introduction of chess to Europe facilitated the exchange of ideas between cultures. Merchants, diplomats and travelers from the Middle East and Asia brought not only exotic goods but also knowledge of this fascinating board game. Chess thus became a tool of cultural exchange, connecting various civilizations and fostering a sense of internationalism in a time of relative isolation and introversion.
