"chat"

So twice this has happened.. I play through an entire game with somone the whole time not seeing that they sent me a greetin' of some sort. I realize at the end and feel like a "D" for not responding. I thought when a message was sent the default setting would (for that message) go to chat... Mine stays on "moves." Is it possible to keep "chat" on, as the default for my computer??
