Hi guys and welcome to day two of my 100 day series! Todays chess player is Anatoly Karpov
Anatoly Karpov: A Chess Genius
Anatoly Karpov was born on May 23, 1951, in Zlatoust, Russia, and is considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time. As one of the greatest strategists of all time and an exceptionally skilled endgame player, Karpov dominated the world chess landscape for more than two decades in the late 20th century, his chess reign running from 1975 through 1985.
Early Life and Chess Career
Karpov was a child prodigy who started learning chess at the age of four and then went through the stages of Soviet youth competitions very fast. In 1970, he became a grandmaster; he started appearing in international tournaments with good results and proved to be a powerful opponent.
Rise to Prominence
Karpov's rise to the top in chess started seriously when he played against Bobby Fischer for the World Championship in 1975. When Fischer refused to play the match under conditions proposed by FIDE, Karpov was declared the winner by default. He then successfully defended his title several times against other challengers, among them Viktor Korchnoi, in two grueling matches in 1974 and 1978.
Playing Style
He is known for his positional style of play, characterized by deep understanding, patience, and meticulous calculation. Whereas many of his contemporaries prefer aggressive, tactical styles of play, Karpov is more likely to extract something from a small advantage, often easing into winning positions with subtle, strategic play. His endgame technique is also especially praised as it often allowed him to turn even the tiniest advantages to his benefit.
Notable Achievements
In his reign, he won many great tournaments and different first prizes. His two matches against Korchnoi were especially historic, not only in the respect of great fights but also in political and psychological tensions because they mirrored the entire East-West Cold War conflict.
Even after losing the title to Garry Kasparov in 1985, Karpov continued playing at very high levels, decades later, as one of the elite players. He won many tournaments after his championship and proved that he could adapt to change.

The influence of Karpov goes beyond chess because he involved himself in various philanthropic and political activities. A member of the Russian State Duma, he actively promoted chess education internationally. Karpov wrote several books about chess strategy, willing to share his immense experience with novice players.
Legacy
Anatoly Karpov left his stamp on chess. He is celebrated not only for his victories but for the weight of his input into the history of the game. His analytical abilities, coupled with his seeming imperviousness to nervous pressure, make him an inspiration to many generations of players. Today, Karpov is counted among the greatest chess players in the world, an appellation that reflects the depth of his impact on the game.
Anatoly Karpov is much more than just one of the former world champions; he is a symbol of the best chess player and quite an important figure in the development of the sport. His legacy keeps on inspiring both amateur and professional chess players all over the world.
