When to sacrifice?
Sacrificing in chess means giving up a piece on purpose to gain a better advantage. It’s risky, but powerful when done at the right time. Here’s when to sacrifice:
To checkmate the king – If giving up a piece leads to checkmate or a huge attack, the sacrifice is worth it.
To win material later – Sometimes you sacrifice a piece to trick your opponent and win back more valuable pieces.
To break open the king’s defense – Sacrificing can open up lines (like files or diagonals) to attack the enemy king.
To promote a pawn – In endgames, you might sacrifice a piece so your pawn can safely reach the 8th rank and promote.
To gain a positional advantage – You might sacrifice for better control of the board, strong squares, or more active pieces.
Always double-check before sacrificing—make sure you’re not just losing material for nothing. Smart sacrifices come from good calculation and planning!
