There are many people that are interested in chess, but not many of them have an official elo rating. Though, these days online chess become a thing and there's this thing call an online rating. You start with 1000 elo points and you win you get points. On the other hand, you lose you lost points.
It is a very real thing that everyone want to know their rating even if it's just for fun. For example, you have been playing chess offline a lot but not any in tournament. It could be wrong to state that your elo rating is just 1000.
