This blog is an overview on Paul Morphy, arguably one of the very first pioneers of chess. So let us take a quick dive into the life of Paul Morphy.

Early Life

Paul Morphy was born in New Orleans to a rich and distinguished family. According to Ernest Morphy, his uncle, Paul learned chess by simply looking at the aristocrats playing at his house!

Paul grew up in a surrounding of great civility and dignity. Music and chess were said to be the main entertainment in Paul's house during typical afternoons.

After watching a lengthy game between his father and uncle, which they had abandoned as a draw, Paul surprised them by stating that Ernest would have won. His father and uncle were surprised by the tactical chess visions that Morphy exhibited even at a young age.

Ernest played as the second for Eugène Rousseau and Paul was taken along.

Best Games

In the above game played by Morphy, he shows extreme understanding for sacrifices even when computers didn't exist.
