Hikaru Nakamura was born on December 9, 1987, in Hirakata, Japan. His father is Shuichi Nakamura, a Japanese citizen who worked as a systems engineer, and his mother is Carolyn Weeramantry, a Sri Lankan-born American citizen who worked as a chess teacher. Hikaru has a younger brother, Asuka Nakamura, who is also a chess player. Hikaru's parents divorced when he was two years old, and he moved to the United States with his mother and brother. He grew up in White Plains, New York.
Hikaru learned to play chess from his stepfather, Sunil Weeramantry, who is also a chess master and an author of several chess books. He also represented the United States in several Olympiads and World Team Championships, winning gold medals both individually and as a team member.
