As of May 2026, Chess.com has rolled out several major updates focused on Fair Play technology, AI coaching, and a UI overhaul. If you haven’t logged in for a while, the platform looks and feels a bit different.

Here is your guide to the latest changes and how to navigate them.

1. The "Proctor" Fair Play Revolution
The biggest technical update is the full integration of Proctor, Chess.com’s new anti-cheating browser.

What it is: A specialized browser environment required for most prize-money events (like Titled Tuesday).

Why it matters: It significantly restricts background processes and screen-sharing, aiming to make online competitive chess the cleanest it has ever been.
For Casual Players: You don't need Proctor for standard rated games, but you will see stricter "Fair Play" messaging and faster rating refunds if an opponent is banned.
2. UI & Social Navigation Overhaul
The interface received a facelift in early 2026 that has been polarizing for some users.

Split Windows: In-game chat and the move list have been split into separate, toggleable windows to reduce clutter on the board area.
Notification Center: The old "hover menu" for notifications has been replaced. You now have a dedicated social dashboard to track friends, milestones, and forum replies more easily.
Customization: There are new Board Presets (accessible via Settings > Board) that allow you to save specific "looks" (e.g., a "Deep Sea" theme for blitz and a "Classic Wood" theme for daily chess).

3. "Voice for Coach" & New AI Personalities
The AI Coach feature has moved beyond just text.

Judit Polgar AI: The legendary GM Judit Polgar has joined the roster of AI coaches. You can now select her to analyze your games with her specific aggressive, tactical philosophy.

Voice Integration: You can now enable Voice for Coach, which dictates move evaluations and suggestions in real-time (during practice) or during game review, making it feel more like a private lesson.
Voice Control: In the accessibility settings, you can now play moves entirely by voice command (e.g., "Knight to f3")—a huge win for hands-free play or accessibility.
4. 2026 Community Championships & Variants
Chess.com is leaning heavily into Variants this year. Each month features a different championship:

Current Month (May): King of the Hill Championship.

Upcoming (June/July): Hyperbullet and the new Spell Chess championship.

New Monthly Bots: Each month features themed bots. May 2026 is "Pirate Month"—you can challenge a crew of pirate-themed AI with unique dialogue and playstyles to earn limited-edition badges.

5. Policy & Safety Updates (March 2026)
Mass Arbitration: New legal terms were added to handle large-scale disputes, and the platform officially banned the use of any AI tools (even for "fun") to scrape site data or automate chat.

Toxic Behavior Detection: New AI-driven moderation is now live, which detects "taunting" or "sandbagging" (losing on purpose to lower your rating) much faster than previous human-report systems.

Pro Tip for 2026

If the new UI feels too "busy," go to Settings > Appearance and look for the "Zen Mode" toggle. It hides everything except the board and the clock, which many players are finding essential to combat the new, more social-heavy layout.
