An American Chess Tragedy

For a brief moment this week, a story from the chess world breached the national spotlight. Unfortunately, it was not a positive story, but a tragic one. On Sunday, October 19th, Daniel "Danya" Naroditsky died at the age of 29. While authorities are investigating the death as a possible suicide, no official cause of death has been released.

It's a terrible loss for the chess community, and for all those who loved him. When a man dies at such a ripe age, emotions flare. Many have expressed their sadness, their anger, and even their peace at the death of the American Grandmaster. I'll be taking a deep dive into all of those emotions into today's version of the Hornet Editorial.

How did we get here?

Naroditsky was a very accomplished grandmaster, ranked (as of his passing) No. 14 in the United States and No. 98 in the entire world. He was well known to the public for his popular online chess streams, where he would play blitz and bullet chess, once holding the highest ratings on chess.com in both time controls. In over the board chess, Daniel was less prominent, but had some notable victories, such as against then world No. 2 Fabiano Caruana in 2021 at the U.S Chess Championship.

At the time of his death, Naroditsky's Youtube channel had 494K subsrcibers

Outside of online and in-person tournaments, Naroditsky regularly wrote a column for Chess Life called "The Practical Endgame" and in 2022 served as a chess columnist for the New York Times.

In the wake of his death, there was an outpouring of condolences from chess masters and chess organizations all over the world.

On top of these tributes there were countless more from his viewers, thanking and crediting Naroditsky for teaching them the game and having a blast while doing so. Some who have been grieved at Danya's passing though, have expressed their anger, and at one specific target. And while I don't support jumping to conclusions about who did what this soon after the death, I believe it's important to at least explore this point of view.

Kramnik's Complicity?

Former World Chess Champion, Vladimir Kramnik has had a history of making unfounded accusations against other chess players since 2023. His accusations for the most part have been shrugged off as most people found his accusations to be lacking any substantial evidence.

At his peak, Kramnik had a rating of 2817. Since then, he has dropped 64 points to 2753.

Beginning in October 2024, Kramnik accused the late Naroditsky of cheating in online chess. Like his previous accusations against others, his statements lacked evidence.

At the time, many in chess community pushed back against Kramnik, including Naroditsky himself.

To do what Kramnik has done and what everybody who supports him have done, in my mind, morally, it makes you worse than dirt - Daniel Naroditsky

He (Kramnik) is trying to ruin my life; he’s trying to inflict emotional harm, physical harm on me. He knows exactly what he’s doing. - Daniel Naroditsky

Naroditsky also commented that those who believed Kramnik's claims were an "army of troglodyte lowlifes". When Naroditsky and others clamored for Kramnik to provide evidence of this so called cheating, he only provided very circumstantial "proof" of his claims.

At the time, no action besides the verbal pushback I mentioned was taken. Now, we have a young and bright chess player dead. This lead many of Naroditsky's friends and allies to immediately point the finger at Kramnik. Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin wrote on X

The relentless, baseless accusations and public interrogations he faced in recent months caused him immense pressure and pain. This has to stop. When respected figures spread unfounded allegations without accountability, real lives are destroyed.

Others cited a clip from Naroditsky's final stream where he addressed the ongoing allegations.

FIDE announced on Wednesday that it would be launching a probe into his possible harassment of Naroditsky, which came as an annoyance to Kramnik, saying to the New York Post,

What is happening now is, unfortunately, a continuation of a very, very dirty PR campaign, which I started to be a target for already two years... Maybe he is under some substances, but something was clearly wrong with him, very very wrong. And nobody did anything, and now they are blaming me, who was the only one trying to tell police, friends, people who are close, ‘Come and do something about it,'”... I really would like that the investigation to take place [is a] very serious police investigation, and that we all know what happened... Some things [that] were really strange were happening. The fact that all his videos on his Twitch channel were erased like a few hours before his death... - Vladimir Kramnik

Kramnik added that he will take legal action against everyone who has blamed him for Daniel Naroditsky's death.

My Take

It's obviously a very terrible thing that has happened. I don't think there should be any downplaying of what went on. If the suicide theory is to be believed, do I think Kramnik is solely at fault for Naroditsky's death? No. A contributing factor? Yes. While Kramnik's allegations did not directly cause Naroditsky's death, it's clear that the allegations and scrutiny exposed some deep vulnerabilities in Daniel's psyche. Obviously, Kramnik was wrong to blindly accuse Naroditsky of such a thing; I'm not suggesting otherwise. However, I do believe the problem extends beyond Kramnik himself.

Over the past couple of years, we have normalized cheating allegations, beginning with Magnus Carlsen's cheating allegations against Han's Niemann. I'd like to remind everyone that those are still allegations. Magnus hasn't provided strong evidence to show Hans cheated at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup. The allegations severely hurt Hans reputation, they still do. Yes, Hans did admit to cheating in online games, but the allegations did severe damage on their own. Since then, in 2023, Vladimir Kramnik again, accused Hikaru Nakamura of cheating after Hikaru went on a 55 game win streak on Chess.com. And in 2024, during a Titled Tuesday event, Russian Grandmaster, Ian Nepomniachtchi accused one of his opponents of cheating. Unfortunately, until now, FIDE never took any serious action against baseless accusations.

1995-2025

We had to learn the hard lesson before we realized, like we have many times before in life. Hopefully this time, we will learn. Daniel was three weeks away from turning 30. Now we'll never know what his full impact would've been.  A great tragedy has happened, and American chess will never be the same because of it. His legacy should inspire us to foster a more supportive environment, free of unfounded allegations that can destroy lives.  Rest in peace, Danya.
