Some chess players arrive late to tournaments for a few key reasons:

  1. Underestimating travel time - Tournaments are often held in different cities or even countries, and players may underestimate the time required to get to the venue, especially if dealing with traffic, transportation delays, or other logistical issues.
  2. Overconfidence - Some players, especially those who are highly ranked or experienced, may feel overconfident and think they can get away with arriving a bit late without it impacting their performance. This overconfidence can lead to poor time management.
  3. Nerves or anxiety - The pressure and intensity of a tournament setting can cause some players to feel anxious or nervous, which can lead to last-minute delays as they try to psyche themselves up before the game.
  4. Distractions or obligations - Players may have personal or professional obligations outside of the tournament that cause delays, such as media interviews, sponsor commitments, or family matters they need to attend to.
  5. Lack of preparation - If a player has not properly planned their travel and logistics leading up to the tournament, they may find themselves rushed and running late on the day of play.
  6. It also happens that a player must attend to something more important to him than the game – you cannot serve two masters at the same time.
Arriving late can have negative consequences for chess players, as it can disrupt their pre-game rituals, cause them to miss the start of their game, and potentially incur penalties from the tournament organizers. Developing better time management and logistical planning skills is important for chess players to avoid these issues.

Here is one of the games where my opponent was a seed and came late. I don't know whether this was part of his strategy to bring down his opponent's mentality or not, but I think coming late is not a positive thing to get the best results in a chess tournament.

Some player may be inspired by Magnus Carlsen who came late and still won, but this is not a good habit to have if done frequently.

How about you? Is it difficult to arrive on time for a tournament?
