I found this puzzle in a book that I read a few years ago. This puzzle comes from an ancient Persian text called Kitab ash-sharanj (the book of chess). The author, ad-Adli, was known at his time (around 836 A.D.) as one of the best players of the Persian/Turkish area. His book was known as one of the first attempts of deep chess analysis and consisted of 5 levels.
