Adding diagrams to vote chess games

These instructions are being made from a Windows computer, but these instructions should also work for other types of devices.

To make a diagram that starts from the position you see on the game board and insert it into your post, follow these steps.

  1. If there is anything you would like to write before you add a diagram to your post, start by typing it out where you would normally. In this example, I want to write “15.c6 is what I would play. I think we can start to work on the centre. Maybe something like this to start, but I'd like to hear other ideas.” and have it show before my diagram in my post. TIP: leave your cursor at the end of the sentence because when you insert a diagram, it will get inserted where the cursor is.

  1. Go to your game information panel. Click on the Download control. A new window will open.

  1. Copy the FEN to the clipboard. You can click on the FEN to select (highlight) it and then copy it (Ctrl+C or right-click and select Copy). After the FEN is copied, close this window.

  1. Go back to your post. (Is your cursor still at the end of the sentence?) Click on the Insert chess game or diagram control.

  1. The Insert Chess Game, Position, or Puzzle window will open. Click on the Load from FEN option and it will expand.

  1. Paste the FEN you previously copied in the Paste FEN entry box by clicking in the entry box and pasting (Ctrl+V or right-click and select Paste).

  1. Click the Load button.

  1. The game board will change and show the current position with the light piece at the bottom. If you are playing the light pieces, skip to step 12. If you are playing the dark pieces, continue with step 9.

  1. To flip the board (put the dark pieces at the bottom), click on the Setup Position option and it will expand.

  1. Click on the Flip Board control.

  1. Click on the Moves option.

  1. You are now ready to start making your diagram. Make moves on the game board and they will appear in Moves.

  1. Adding comments or notation to your moves can make it easier for people to understand why that move is being played. You can add comments by selecting (highlighting) the move, right-clicking on it, selecting Comment After, and typing your comment by clicking on Add Comment... and starting to type. TIP: when you are finished typing your comment, do not press Enter – just click on any move you have made.

  1. If you would like to show a different line in your diagram, click on the move before the new line and make a new move. You can continue making moves in your new line.

  1. When you are finished making your diagram, click the Insert button. (It will be inserted in your post where your cursor was.)

  1. The diagram will not show up in your post until you actually post it. This is normal. Before it is posted, it will look like this. You can expand the posting view size by clicking on and dragging the view size control, but you do not need to do this. TIP: the view size control is the triangle shaped dots at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar.

  1. Your post, with your diagram, will show up properly after you press the Post button.
