When wq sneaks into g6, we may have the makings of Greco's Mate. It was given to this name in The Art of the Checkmate by Georges Renaud and Victor Kahn, first published in English in 1953. While this name could apply to a wide range of positions where White opens the h-file by means of a knight sacrifice on the g-file, Italian chess writer Gioacchino Greco (1600-c.1634) published a lot of ground-breaking content on the maneuver.

112) In the basic pattern the wn sacrifice allows for a lethal wq switchback.

113) From this position, wb nudges bk to h8 to set up the pattern.
114) With bn already in place, black can use the same pattern by correctly placing bq in a pinning position.
115) Black's pinning bb allows bq to strategically advance prior to the bn sacrifice.
