I am reading How to Beat Your Dad at Chess by Murray Chandler. I am blogging to create supporting puzzles in studying the content.

I often find myself tempted to go for the wbxh6 sacrifice. Here Chandler gives a sound basis to the approach.

  1. Pick up bp and bp for the bishop and land some checks on the now vulnerable bk.
  2. Tie up Black kingside while constructing a meting approach

124) This is the vanilla, garden variety scenario where White follows up with bringing in wq and light-squared wb to complete mate after a series of forcing moves. wq will mate with wb support.

125) Once wqxh6 occurs, White has multiple options. In this puzzle wng5 presages both knights brought in by White to complete mate without wq being distracted by a hanging bn.
126) Here following up the wbsacrifice with wq forcing enough moves on the vulnerable bk to eventually capture bq. She is prompted to get in off the sidelines to prevent a wne7#.
