Pawn sacrifice
I have been reading Watson's secrets of modern chess. Very interesting.
He advocates the use of pawns to achieve a positional advantage, take the following example:
Here is another type where the goal is to achieve an unopposed outpost.
Here is another example where for the cost of one pawn we achieve both open lines and an outpost
