A Harmonious Attack Daily Puzzle Explanation 7/12/23
Hi all! In today's puzzle, A Harmonious Attack, I will give an explanation. First, lets see the position:
Notice how the queen is pinned to the king. You may try trading queens as the first move to this puzzle. That would not work as right now white has a mate 5 and white would lose that position if white traded queens right away. The correct move to make is pushing the pawn on the g-file to check the king. The reason why we don't want to trade queens is because the king can go to h4 which will not allow for a mate in 5. The queen guards h4 after the pawn advances so the king is forced to g2. Now is the time to trade queens. It is actually a blunder to recapture black's queen because that allows for a quicker checkmate. Now, if we got the rook to g1, that would be checkmate. To achieve this, black moves the rook to f2, which forces the king to either g1 or h1. Then black moves the rook to f1 and the white king is forced back to the square it was on the previous move. Now that the rook is on the first rank, black delivers checkmate with Rook g1. You can practice the daily puzzle here:
