Merry Christmas πβοΈββοΈ Everyone!!
I hope you are having a great Christmas ππ!!!
I wish you good luck in your celebrations; and of course will present a π Puzzle to solve!
Stay tuned for the story in the PβοΈstscript!
Solve the Christmas Puzzle!!
Note: The puzzle was sent by Pal Benko to Chessbase in 2018.
I am struggling to make the arrows. Sorry for not using them, but as you might have noticed that:
a] The Ke1 and Ne2 is the trunk;
b] The mass of pieces from g3-c3-c4-d5-d6-e7-f6-f5-g4-g3 is the tree; and
c] The Be8 is the star on top of the tree.
Now the story that you all have been waiting for! It may sound a bit crazy, but it is fully legitimate and real.
PβοΈstcript!: It was 1914. The first year of World War 1. Heavy fighting in the trenches on the Western Front. No time to celebrate Christmas and I am an idiot, you say?! Of course not! As you have seen from the thumbnail, admittedly illustrated picture, the soldiers still found the time to celebrate Christmas!! βοΈβοΈ In 1914, German soldiers walked calmly into No Man's Land, and once the British understood that they weren't being tricked, joined the celebrations and even shared rations [especially wine and beer], planted Christmas trees, buried the dead together [!!] and even played football [!!!] with real balls [I don't know where they came from] or even empty beef cans!! Of course the commanders thought that this was nonsense, and even Hitler protested against the Germans participating in this truce, but in spite of their resistance, the celebrations continued for a few days, and in some cases until New Year's Eve, and that too across the Western Front!!
