Endgame Queen vs Rook (Overview)
In the endgame King and Queen vs. King and Rook it is useful to know some general guidelines, which can help you to navigate this endgame.
I will outline a general plan for winning this endgame. However let’s not forget, the difficulty lies in performing the specific moves within a time limit.
- First, push the king and the rook out of the center of the board. The rook may have been in a fourth-rank defense; or, when training with an engine/tablebase, it may annoy the queen side with checks from behind (this however is the exception, and very difficult to handle).
- Try to overcome the third-rank defense. This is a tenacious set up for the rook side.
- Aiming for a Philidor-position from a second-rank defense. By using zugzwang techniques and the cut-off of the king from the first-rank (eight-rank), the queen side can compel the rook side to the edge or in the corner of the board.
- Winning the rook from Philidor’s position. This position is well-explained in many books and videos.
