In just 3 days, 114 players from around the world will compete for 2 of the last 4 spots in the 2022 Candidates. The FIDE Grand Swiss will be held in Riga, Latvia.
The event will run from October 25th → November 8th
Why is it important
In case you didn’t know, Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi is challenging the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, for the title this year. He won this chance after winning the 2021 candidates tournament. They’re 5 ways to make your way into the 2022 Candidates.

How did the Players Qualify?
With all 114 players grasping at a chance for the title; you may be wondering how they got their shot. Here are all the ways a player can qualify for the FIDE Grand Swiss.
- Top 100 players based on Average FIDE rating from July 1st, 2020 to June 1st, 2021.
- 4 nominations by the four FIDE continental presidents
- 4 nominations of the FIDE President
- 5 other nominations of the FIDE organization
- 1 Spot for the Women’s World Chess Champion (Ju Wenjun)
Who is at the Top?
The leader based on FIDE rating is none other than Fabiano Caruana. He is a favorite to win the event. He is coming from a tough loss in the U.S Chess open, in which he had to fight hard for a spot in the finals. His mentality showed chess fans not to lose hope in him. After not winning the 2021 Candidates, Fabiano would surely like a spot in the 2022 Candidates tournament.
How will the Event Work?
This is an 11 round event. Each round a player will play another player with the same tournament score. The time control is classical. There will be 100 minutes for the first 40 moves and then an additional 30 minutes. Similar to the U.S Open, players will gain an additional 30 seconds after every move.
