We all suffered a great loss with the passing of Daniel Naroditsky in October 2025, just short of his 30th birthday. To the chess world, "Danya" was a brilliant, world-class grandmaster, a chess commentator, and a gifted teacher.
Whether he's taking on the strongest grandmasters or having a great time commentating on a game between two newbies, one thing is always clear—his passion for chess shines through!
The game is a war, and in a war you fight. My opponent is just the director of the opponent's army.
— Daniel Naroditsky
GAME 1: Wesley So (2778) - Daniel Naroditsky (2623): 1/2
This match went down during the U.S. Championships in St. Louis back in 2021. Daniel Naroditsky was with the black pieces, and his opponent, Wesley So, was playing with white. Wesley, who's one of the top chess players in the U.S., won the tournament overall, but in this particular match, he ended up drawing with Danya!
Such a brilliant match full of ups and downs! Lots of sacrifices from Black, performing an excellent game, telling the importance of king safety and how we would want to attack our opponents' kings.
It was incredibly unfortunate that Danya didn't manage to win this game, but still, WOW!
GAME 2: Magnus Carlsen (3210) - Daniel Naroditsky (3189): 0-1 [CHESS.COM GAME]
Next up… a win against Magnus Carlsen? Yes, you heard that right! While this game isn't an over-the-board match, as it took place on chess.com, a victory against the GOAT is still impressive. I won't document the entire game; instead, I'll start from the position below, where things became truly remarkable.

Yes, a rook sacrifice against Magnus! I believe this was a Blitz game, and both players were running out of time. Rook sacrifices in positions like this are very common, especially among grandmasters. The move aims to open up the opponent's king and initiate a dangerous attack. However, always remember to calculate your moves before playing!
GAME 3: Andrew Tang (3385) - Daniel Naroditsky (3459) 0 - 1 [CHESS.COM]
Again, an online game. I bet you could guess that by their ratings...I mean above 3000? Wow. And yet again, I would only show the position where things get spicy! Danya's facing the Andrew Tang, or if you want to call him the "Penguin GM", then sure, an American grandmaster with an exceptional skill at bullet chess, often playing -30 seconds or 60 seconds matches with no increment.
Wow! We see the hidden possibilities in a position!
GAME 4: Fabiano Caurana - Daniel Naroditsky 0 - 1
This game took place at the US Championships in St. Louis and is one of the most notable in Danya's career. Achieving a victory against the No. 3 player? Incredible!
Playing as White in a Ruy Lopez, Caruana initially seemed to be on track for a win with a strong push up the centre. However, he made a critical mistake by playing 29. Nc3, which allowed Naroditsky to seize the initiative by trading queens with 30... Qb3. The players put significant pressure on Fabiano, leading to a mistake at 36. Rc1?, which resulted in a material advantage for Black.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Daniel Naroditsky's games highlight his incredible talent and passion for chess. From drawing with top players like Wesley So to winning against Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, he proved that he could hold his own against the best. Danya's ability to create exciting and instructive moments on the board not only made him a great player but also a beloved figure in the chess community. His legacy will continue to inspire chess enthusiasts for years to come.
