Hikaru Nakamura During A Tournament

The Opening:

The game starts with the Sicilian Defence, a flexible and solid opening choice by GM Loek van Wely. This opening is great for creating a robust position while keeping plenty of options open. Here’s the first few opening moves:

This setup is known as the "Sicilian Defense: Open, Najdorf Variation" and it allows for a lot of manoeuvrability and strategic planning. Hikaru opts for a setup that allows him to be patient and build a strong position without committing too early.

Middle Game:
As the game progresses, Hikaru's moves show incredible precision. He slowly builds up his position, focusing on piece activity and central control. Here are a few key moves:

Hikaru's pieces are well-coordinated, ready to strike at the right moment. He avoids unnecessary pawn moves, which helps maintain the flexibility of his position. This careful approach ensures that he can adapt to any of van Wely’s plans.

The Brilliant Move!!!!
Now, Hikaru's spots an incredible knight dance aroung the board! These knight moves force the Queen all over the board!! Here it is:

And finally, Hikaru SPOTS an AMAZING tactical opportunity that leaves van Wely stunned.

Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura Sacrifices...

You guessed it...

THE ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKKKKKKK!!!!!

BOOM! ROOK TO B6! AN INCREDIBLE SACRIFICE!!!! This is the moment where Hikaru's genius shines through! By playing Rb6, Hikaru not only places his Rook on a powerful outpost but also opens up the game in a way that van Wely didn't anticipate. This move disrupts van Wely’s coordination and Van Wely RESIGNS!

Hikaru’s pieces dominate the board, leaving van Wely with no counterplay. Every move is calculated to restrict van Wely’s pieces and create weaknesses.

BUT there are two ways that Van Wely could have taken the Rook. If he took with the queen, he would have lost SIGNIFICANT material and then been forced to resign or to be checkmated

However, if Van Wely took with the knight, it seems that Hikaru is now just losing. But that it the opposite of the case. Hikaru Nakamura has a MATE-IN-TWO!! With these moves:

ANOTHER SACRIFICE!!! This Knight allowes for the Queen to sneak in to D8 and deliver a beautiful CHECKMATE!
