The Mission Ahead

Your heart pounds as you stand in front of the imposing, steel-reinforced vault. The mission briefing replays in your head - this is no regular job. You have been put onto a high-stakes mission that might just change the future face of competitive chess. The world's most top-secret agency, known only as "Knightshade", has entrusted you with the most delicate of assignments. An advanced cheating device, developed by a criminal organization, has ensured that the players can easily win OTB and online chess tournaments without leaving behind any trace of foul play. Deep inside this state-of-the-art, high-security vault is a device that could ruin the credibility of every chess championship and shake the game to the core.

Your mission? Infiltrate the underground base of the organization, break into the vault, and destroy the device before it spreads worldwide. But the way to the vault is perilous, guarded by sophisticated locks and puzzles, all designed by some of the greatest and most evil chess minds in the world. Each layer of security builds upon chess problems and riddles, crafted to test even the sharpest chess intellects.

Fortunately, you are not entirely on your own. You’re equipped with a special Knightshade-issued device loaded with the most advanced chess databases and access to historical game archives. This powerful tool will help you decode some of the most impossible chess puzzles ever devised,

but even the best in technology can only take you so far. The rest is up to you and your strategic thinking. So use these tools to your advantage.

Every puzzle needs to be solved to make progress. Every move you make, every decision could either bring you closer to the device or seal your fate in this underground fortress. The vault awaits, but so do the traps, tricks, and chess conundrums that come with it.

Can you beat their layers of defenses, or will this mission become your last?

Prepare yourself, Agent—it’s time to make your move.

The Entrance

You step into the dimly lit corridor, the door sliding shut behind you with a soft hiss. Ahead lies your first challenge—a series of crisscrossing red lasers blocking the way to the vault. The grid hums ominously, its deathly beams ready to trip  the alarm. Along the wall, an articulated control panel pulses with lights, signaling that this security feature is live.

You go down on your knees beside the control panel, searching for an access point. You come across a small latch and cautiously pry the panel open to show you a mess of wiring behind. Your eyes fall upon a small note, folded and tucked just inside that panel, well hidden amongst the wires. You pull it out and unfold it to find, in neat handwriting, a message - a riddle to guide your next move. Perhaps this was left behind by a past agent, hoping someone else would follow his path to the device.

The note goes like this:

"Choose the wrong wire to disable the grid. The wrong wire triggers the alarm."

You look at the wires; red, blue, green, and yellow, each one leading into the laser grid system. They are all identical in appearance, yet you know only one will let you pass safely.

On the panel case, you spot a riddle scratched into it's gleaming metal:

"SYSTEM OVERRIDE PROTOCOL: FINAL MOVE"

“In ’99, two masters clashed,
Kasparov’s last move left Topalov dashed.
The final blow, decisive and clear—
Cut the right wire, and the way is near.”

You reach for your Knightshade device, knowing that disabling this layer of protection will require more than brute force.

You notice each wire is etched with a chess move. You realize that only one of these wires, corresponding to the correct final move, will disable the laser grid. Cut the wrong one, and the alarms will trigger instantly, locking down the entire facility. But if you choose correctly, the lasers will shut down, and you'll be able to slip through to the next phase of the heist.

It’s time to make the call. Which wire do you cut?

  1. Red wire - [Rxd4]
  2. Blue wire - [Qa7]
  3. Green wire - [Nf3]
  4. Yellow wire - [Bxg7+]

Incorrect Wire

As you snip the wire, the entire control panel lights up in an ominous red. The lasers stay active, and within seconds, a shrill alarm begins blaring, its piercing sound echoing down the hall. Before you can react, steel barriers slide down, sealing off every exit. The room floods with flashing lights, and a metallic voice over the intercom coldly announces: “Intruder detected. Lockdown protocol engaged.”

Within minutes, guards flood the corridor, their footsteps closing in as you're immobilized by the reinforced walls around you. You've been caught—trapped in the vault with no chance to escape.

Hours later, the report reaches HQ: “Agent compromised. Mission failed.” Another agent will have to take your place, armed with new intel from your attempt. The heist isn’t over yet—but your part in it has come to a sudden end.

Restart the Heist

Correct Wire

With steady hands, you select the wire corresponding to the final move. You hold your breath as you snip it—and the red lasers blink once, then vanish altogether. The hum of the security system fades to silence, replaced by the soft click of an unlocking door just ahead. A small green light appears on the control panel, confirming: Laser grid deactivated.

You exhale in relief. The path to the vault’s inner chamber is now clear, but you know the heist is far from over. As you step forward, the next door slides open, revealing a hallway with a high-security biometric scanner ahead.

The mission continues

The Second Chamber

You step into the second chamber, and the heavy steel door slides shut with silent but unsettling finality behind you. That room is dark; its walls lined with sleek control panels and displays. At the center, there is a tall, reinforced safe-secured by an intricate electronic lock.

Directly in front of the safe is a control console with a glass-encased keypad, and above it, a display screen with the following message in bold flashing letters:

"Access Code Required: Solve the Sequence to Proceed"

As you approach, you notice three "Italian Game Files" resting on a nearby table. On opening each file, you find that all contain game notations. Below the files, another message reads:

“Identify the missing game in the sequence to access the code. Type the final move of the missing game to unlock the door”

The files are labeled as follows:

FILE 1

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4 Bc5 5.c3 Nf6

As you study the files, you notice a slight hum behind you. You jump round to notice a small illuminating keypad, the screen flashes four possible sequences. Each sequence seems to match up with a different game from the Italian Game files. Except one. Only one of these sequences will sync the magnetic fields and unlock the door; the others may trigger the vault’s security system.

Choose wisely which of these Games is not in the Files:

"Morphy vs. Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard, 1858"
"Sunil Weeramantry vs Manoj Kumar, 2004"
"Ezra Sidran vs Ron Thompson, 1992"
"Lamont Nelson vs Zoltan Sugar, 2006"

The Wrong Answer

You press the keypad, and for a split second, all is silent. Then, a blaring alarm fills the room, the magnetic fields surge back to life, locking the door tighter than before. Suddenly, gas begins to hiss from hidden vents, flooding the room with a paralyzing mist.

A voice crackles over the intercom:

"Intruder compromised. Initiating lockdown protocol."

The mission has failed. All you can hope is that HQ has a backup plan—or another agent—ready to continue the heist.

Retry The Heist

The Correct Choice

You press the correct sequence, and for a moment, there’s nothing but silence. Then, the keypad flashes green, and the hum of the magnetic fields fades away. With a soft click, the massive vault door shifts, and then, perfectly, it begins to slide open. Cold air rushes in from the next room, carrying with it a low whirring sound and the faintest scent of polished steel.

Stepping through, you realize this isn’t just another room; it’s a secure containment chamber, each wall lined with reinforced panels, and a console at the center. The blue glow of digital screens illuminates the heart of the room: a glass case holding the infamous cheating device you’ve been sent to retrieve. You’re getting closer, but you know this room won’t be so easily unlocked. Taking a deep breath, you prepare for the next challenge.

Step into the next room

The Final Gambit: Decode the Vault

You step into the containment chamber, heart pounding. The room feels colder than the last, and the faint hum of machinery fills the air. Dim blue lights illuminate walls lined with high-security vaults, each labeled with numbers and codes you can’t decipher at first glance. In the center of the room sits a sleek glass case displaying the device you’ve come for—a small, unassuming black box with intricate carvings of chess pieces and notations embedded within it.

The containment chamber is set up in a perfectly symmetrical grid, with four separate puzzle stations arranged around you, positioned at the North, East, South, and West walls. Each station holds a unique and complex puzzle, carefully designed to keep out all but the most determined infiltrators. The center of the room holds a large, ominous control panel with four blank spaces waiting for the code digits from each station. Solving each puzzle will reveal one code, and only when all four are entered correctly will the final chamber unlock.

Find the year to reach your goal. The last two digits are your final code.

Make your way to the Final Code

The Final Code

You stand before the final control panel, the last obstacle between you and the chess device you’ve been sent to retrieve. The screen flickers to life, displaying a grid of buttons, each corresponding to one of the four digits you’ve unlocked in the previous puzzles. The buttons are labeled:

[1st Code] - [2nd Code] - [3rd Code] - [4th Code]

A prompt appears at the bottom of the screen:

“Enter your code to proceed. Remember, each digit corresponds to a piece of your journey. Enter them in the correct order to unlock the vault and claim your prize.”

You take a deep breath, carefully recalling the numbers from the puzzles. You enter the digits one by one, your fingers moving swiftly but cautiously. The sound of your heartbeat echoes in the quiet chamber as you press the final button:

1. 34576
2. 81243
3. 42136
4. 71378
5. 73512
6. 91387
7. 24659
8. 63421

Wrong Combination

Nothing happens.

The screen blinks red. An alarm sounds.

“Incorrect code. Security breach detected.”

Suddenly, the walls close in. The doors lock. You’ve failed.

The mission is compromised.

You’ve been caught. The heist has failed, and you’ll have to try again.

Retry The Heist

Correct Combination

You press the final button. For a moment, there’s silence. Then, the screen flashes red, and an unexpected message appears:

"Code Accepted."

The vault door creaks open. You step forward, eager to claim the prize.

But then, something feels off. The vault is too quiet. The chess device… looks different. Almost too pristine.

Suddenly, a voice booms from the speakers, cold and clinical:

"Congratulations, Agent. You’ve been played."

Before you can react, the vault door slams shut, trapping you inside. The lights flicker, and you hear the unmistakable sound of locks clicking into place.

The message continues:

"The device you were after? A decoy. The real prize was testing your skills. You’ve fallen for the trap. There’s no escape from this one."

The screens around you blink to life, displaying a countdown timer.

“You’re locked in. Time to rethink your next move.”
