The Knightmare Escape Room
You slowly open your eyes and find yourself lying on the cold, stone floor of an ancient vault. The air smells of dust and damp, and a dim light flickers from torches lining the walls. You sit up, heart pounding, as you remember how you got here. It was supposed to be a simple exploration – a dare.
But now you're trapped.
Before you stands a massive iron door, its surface covered in intricate carvings of chess pieces. There’s no handle or keyhole in sight – just a golden chessboard embedded above it. You hear a low hum, and a voice reverberates through the chamber:
"Welcome, challenger. You’ve entered the King’s Gambit Vault. Only the finest minds have escaped. To win your freedom, you must outsmart the puzzles within. Fail... and remain here for eternity."
You shudder. The only way out is forward.

Room 1: The Secret Message
You step into the first room. It’s filled with ancient tomes and dusty scrolls scattered around. A large wooden desk stands in the middle of the room with four distinct places to examine: a drawer, a bookshelf, a hidden compartment, and an old chest.
That eerie voice echoes again: “A hidden message lies within these walls. Choose wisely, for one choice may lead to your doom and only one choice leads to your freedom. Seek the correct code and decode it to proceed.”
You have two options:
Option 1: The Drawer
You open the drawer, and find a note with a riddle:
"In battles fought on squares of white,
A match was played one fateful night.
With pieces moved and plans laid bare,
Two masters clashed with skill and flair.
Unscramble this code and find your way,
You must recall who won the day.
Was it the genius with daring plan,
Or the careful mind that outwits the man?
Look to the game, trace every move,
The answer lies in who did prove
Their prowess on the board that day—
Find the victor, unlock the way."
Beneath the note, there’s a series of numbers and letters scattered:
"27. Rf4 b1=Q+ 3. Nc3 Bb4 20. axb4 axb4 9. Ne2 Nc6 18. e5 Nc7 1. d4 Nf6 26. Qh6 b2 17. Qxc1 Ra6 28. Nf1 Qe1 4. f3 d5 12. 0-0 Nb3 8. e3 c4 23. Qf4 Nc7 21. Rxa6 Nxa6 14. Ng3 a5 7. cxd5 exd5 15. g5 Ne8 11. Bg2 Na5 25. Qh4 Ne8 10. g4 0-0 2. c4 e6 16. e4 Nxc1 19. f4 b4 24. f6 g6 6. bxc3 c5 22. f5 b3 5. a3 Bxc3+ 13. Ra2 b5"
Once you've got the answer you decide to go look at the intricate lock on the door
Option 2: The Lock
You approach the door, noticing a complex lock embedded in the surface. Instead of a keyhole, the lock presents a chess position—an intricate mechanism of gears and symbols, each corresponding to chess pieces.
The voice echoes again:
"Before you lies a lock, not of metal, but of mind. Solve the puzzle, and the lock will fall, revealing the next challenge. Fail, and you remain bound within these walls."
On the lock, five paths appear, each linked to a chess piece. Only one will unlock the door. The poem carved into the metal reads:
"In the world of chess, where kings fall and rise,
You must now choose with sharpened eyes.
Five paths before you, but only one,
Holds the secret where the code is won.
One leads to chaos, one to despair,
Another, a trap—proceed if you dare.
Two of them hold a key to the door,
But only one will open it for sure."
"Test your mind, be swift and wise,
Your next move will decide your prize.
Pick from the paths laid before your sight,
Only one reveals the code that's right."
Correct Path: The Lock Falls
You take a deep breath and steady your hand over the puzzle on the door. The pieces in front of you seem to glow faintly, as if challenging you to make the right move. Your finger hovers over the path you've chosen.
With a click, you press the piece into the lock mechanism.
The gears inside the lock grind for a moment, and then—CLICK!
The lock falls from the door, landing on the cold stone floor with a loud clatter. You can feel a rush of adrenaline as you reach for the handle, but as you pull the door, something stops it from opening fully. Another lock, more intricate than the first, has appeared behind it. This one, however, isn’t a puzzle. It's a simple word lock, and engraved beneath it is a riddle:
"Who won the battle to earn the key?
Find the victor, and you will be free."
Your mind races as you decide to go back to the drawer. The cryptic poem, the hidden message—it all pointed to a famous chess game. Who won that game? You must recall the victor, input the correct name, and finally unlock the door.
Wrong Path: A Trap Awaits
Your hands tremble slightly as you input your choice, convinced it holds the secret to opening the door. You feel a momentary sense of satisfaction as the mechanism clicks into place, but something is wrong.
The gears start to spin too fast—grinding and clanking with an ominous sound.
Suddenly, the lock snaps back into place! The door remains sealed, and a sudden surge of cold air fills the room. The once-glowing pieces on the lock dim, and the puzzle resets itself, mocking you for your failed attempt.
A voice echoes through the chamber, low and chilling:
"Wrong move. Retrace your steps. Choose again, or remain imprisoned in this vault."
You have no choice but to return to the start of the section.
The puzzle resets, and the paths before you are once again the same. Will you choose the correct path this time?
Option 1: The Drawer
You open the drawer, and find a note with a riddle:
"In battles fought on squares of white,
A match was played one fateful night.
With pieces moved and plans laid bare,
Two masters clashed with skill and flair.
Unscramble this code and find your way,
You must recall who won the day.

Or the careful mind that outwits the man?
Look to the game, trace every move,
The answer lies in who did prove
Their prowess on the board that day—
Find the victor, unlock the way."
Beneath the note, there’s a series of numbers and letters scattered:
"27. Rf4 b1=Q+ 3. Nc3 Bb4 20. axb4 axb4 9. Ne2 Nc6 18. e5 Nc7 1. d4 Nf6 26. Qh6 b2 17. Qxc1 Ra6 28. Nf1 Qe1 4. f3 d5 12. 0-0 Nb3 8. e3 c4 23. Qf4 Nc7 21. Rxa6 Nxa6 14. Once you've got the answer you decide to go look at the intricate lock on the door
The Second Lock
You return to the door, feeling the weight of the challenge ahead. The first lock had already fallen away earlier with a satisfying click, revealing the second, more intricate lock hidden beneath. It’s been waiting for you, a silent sentinel guarding the exit.
This lock bears no gears or shifting pieces, only a gleaming golden keyhole and the riddle that taunts your memory:
"Who won the battle to earn the key?
Find the victor, and you will be free."
You remember it clearly now—the scroll you found in the drawer, the famous chess game it referenced. It was a pivotal match, and the answer is the name of the victorious player. Everything you’ve done so far has led to this point.
Your fingers hover over the keyhole, where you're meant to input the name. The room feels still, as though holding its breath, waiting for your final decision. One correct answer will unlock the door and release you. One mistake, and the door could seal shut, leaving you trapped.
Choose an Option:
Correct Answer: The Door Opens
Your heart pounds as you carefully input the victor’s name from the famous game. The room feels like it’s holding its breath, waiting for the moment of truth.
CLICK!
The second lock releases with a sharp metallic sound, and the door swings open with a soft creak, revealing the next room beyond. You step forward cautiously, the air in the room cooler, but charged with an eerie sense of anticipation.
In this new room, shadows dance along the walls, illuminated by flickering torches. At the centre, you see another puzzle waiting for you, but this one looks different—more elaborate, as though designed to test everything you’ve learned so far. You notice faint markings on the walls, possibly clues hidden in plain sight, and a large, imposing door at the far end. The journey isn’t over yet, but you’ve made it past the first critical challenge.
Wrong Answer: The Door Seals
You input the name, your breath catching as you wait for the sound of release.
Nothing happens.
Suddenly, the lock snaps back into place with a harsh clunk. The golden keyhole dims, and the room grows colder. You realize with a sinking feeling that you’ve entered the wrong answer. The voice from before returns, echoing through the chamber:
"Wrong answer. Retrace your steps, and choose wisely."
You have no choice but to go back and reconsider the clues. The riddle was clear, but the answer eluded you this time. The door remains closed, the second lock still in place, waiting for the correct victor’s name.
Room 2: The Hidden Game
In this new room, shadows dance along the walls, illuminated by flickering torches. At the centre, you see another puzzle waiting for you, but this one looks different—more elaborate, as though designed to test everything you’ve learned so far. You notice faint markings on the walls, possibly clues hidden in plain sight, and a large, imposing door at the far end. The journey isn’t over yet, but you’ve made it past the first critical challenge.
In the centre of the room lies a large table with chess pieces arranged in an unfamiliar setup. Next to the table is a scroll with a strange riddle embedded within it.
The riddle reads:
"The path to your escape lies in the games of the masters. Solve the riddles, and the door will open."
"In 1851, a famous game was played
Where queens and rooks fell, unafraid.
Find this match where strategy reigned,
And note the final move that claimed."
So, what was the final move of this incredible game:
Correct Answer: The Door Opens
You press your and hold your breath. A soft click echoes through the room, and the door on the far side swings open slowly. Relief washes over you, but you know there may be more challenges ahead. Beyond the door, you can make out another chamber, where the shadows seem to move with purpose.
Stepping forward, you find yourself in a larger room, filled with towering bookshelves and ancient chess sets. In the center, a table holds another puzzle, and a dusty, old book sits open to a random page. This room is grander, and it feels like the stakes have risen. As you approach the table, you see another scroll resting on it, offering clues to what you’ll need to solve next. You’re one step closer to your escape.
Wrong Answer: Try Again
You press your answer, and wait. Nothing happens. The room is ominously silent, with no hint that you've succeeded. Then the door ahead of you seems to shut even tighter and a chill goes through the chamber. You look around, but there's no way forward.
A voice echoes in the room, almost sneering:
"Not quite.. Look again for the master's final stroke, then try again."
You retreat, defeated but undefeated. Maybe this time looking closer at the riddle will disclose what you had missed. The door stays shut, still awaiting the correct move that leads you to the next challenge.
Room 3: The Grandmaster’s Cipher
The room is darkened, lined with dusty shelves filled with ancient leather-bound books and portraits of stern-faced Grandmasters. In the middle, a glittering chessboard shines under a single chandelier; its pieces set at mid-battle. Lying before you on an oak table are three locked boxes, each marked with strange symbols.
You then spot a folded note that reads:
"The secrets of this room are locked away. Solve each riddle and piece together the code."
You sense this room holds more than memories-it's a challenge waiting for your skill.
The First Box
You approach the first box, reading the riddle carved into its surface:
"In 2012, Gelfand faced Anand’s might,
An eighteen-move game, quick as light.
To find your answer, count with care,
The pieces Gelfand captured there."
"This number will be the first digit in the code."
The Second Box
You turn to the second box, which has another riddle etched on its lid:
"In London, where endurance was key,
A game stretched long, as you can see.
A hundred moves, then fifteen more,
Find the year’s end, and you’ll unlock the door"
"This number will be the second and third digits in the code."
The Third Box
You go towards the third box, and its riddle is inscribed in elegant script:
"In ’84, Karpov and Kasparov played,
A series of games in a long crusade.
The 48th game marked the end that day,
How many games were drawn along the way?"
"This number will be the last two digit in the code."
Make your way to the final lock
The Final Lock
You have made it this far and are ready now to work on your final challenge. The final lock is a heavy, steel padlock with five large number wheels across its front. Each wheel has digits from 0 to 9, waiting for the correct combination to be entered. The numbers gleam under the dim light, and with every turn of the wheels, the lock feels closer to releasing its grip on the door. The fate of your escape lies in these five numbers.
Take the five numbers you found in the three boxes - in each is a part of the code. Carefully insert the code in the right order. Then, the door will open, and you will see through to your path to escape. Check your answers again, and when ready, insert your five numbers into to the lock in this order:
[Third Digit] - [First Digit] - [Fifth Digit] - [Fourth Digit] - [Second Digit]
Input your final code:
Wrong combination: try again
With the last number in its place, you could only wait, hoping, for that characteristic click., but nothing happened. The padlock kept its stubborn grip, the door stuck. You start to feel the onset of panic as you realize something must have gone wrong. You glance back at the digits, knowing deep down, somewhere, a clue was misread, a riddle misunderstood. The lock hasn't budged, and time feels as if it is slipping through your fingers.
You feel frustrated, knowing you are about to have to go back. The door stays shut, almost laughing at your attempt. You will have to go all the way back and look again for clues; there is still a chance to get it right, but the clock is ticking away. Failure stings, but the solution is close at hand. Taking a deep breath, you savor your chance to try again and face the challenges. This time you'll succeed.
Choose your next step:
Escape..
Your heart pounds in your chest as you delicately turn the last wheel, locking in the final digit. Silence is all that happens for a moment. Then. Click. The padlock clatters and, with a dense clunk, falls clear of the door. You hold your breath, waiting. Groggily, the door grinds open; a shard of light pours into the room, cutting through the darkness. You are overwhelmed with a feeling of triumph. You did it!
As the door opens wider, the dark confines of the escape room make way for fresh air and freedom. You step across the threshold, and it feels as if the weight of all the puzzles and riddles falls off your shoulder. You turn to look back one last time at the room behind you, a small smile forming on your face. You outsmarted the challenges. Freedom never tasted that great.
