Chess excellence—both in the region and on the global stage—is fast finding a new home in the Land of Smiles. The number of Thai children who have embraced this timeless game has grown tremendously over the past few years, transforming school halls, clubs, and community centers into buzzing hubs of strategic play and intellectual excitement. As I visited the ongoing Thailand Youth Rapid Championship, I was met by a near standing-room-only crowd! Parents, players, spectators, and coaches filled every available space, all eager for the first move to be played. Yet instead of feeling claustrophobic amid the excitement, I felt nothing but joy—joy in witnessing the living proof of the game’s flourishing presence in the country I now fondly call home.

Thailand Chess Association President, Mr. Sahapol Nakvanich giving his welcome address.

An estimated 200-plus young players answered the call to be part of this marquee event—despite the academic term being in full swing, with exams and schoolwork piling high. Mr. Sahapol Nakvanich, the amiable President of the Thailand Chess Association, expressed heartfelt praise during his welcome address as he gazed upon a venue packed wall to wall with young talent and bright enthusiasm. How did this remarkable growth come to be? Several key factors have converged beautifully. The Thailand Chess Association (TCA) has been working tirelessly with a clear vision and an inclusive roadmap for promoting chess nationwide. Their efforts are resonating deeply with schools, parents, and local communities. The rise of chess academies, the presence of skilled and dedicated coaches—many of whom hail from my beloved Philippines—and the increasing accessibility of online learning platforms have all helped ignite a passion for chess among Thai youth.

A room full of hopeful young wizards!

Indeed, this surge represents more than numbers—it reflects a cultural awakening. Chess has become a bridge between generations, a teacher of patience, logic, and resilience in a fast-moving world. Watching these young players think deeply before every move reminds us that brilliance can be nurtured with the right environment and support. If the current momentum continues, it won’t be long before Thailand produces its first wave of internationally acclaimed masters and grandmasters.

The seeds are already sown, and the future looks bright—powered by the sharp minds, strong hearts, and smiling faces of Thailand’s next generation of chess champions. Your guess will be as good as mine!
