Becoming a Grandmaster (GM) in chess is a challenging and rewarding journey that requires a mix of skill, dedication, and experience. Here are the key steps to becoming a GM:
1. Learn the Basics of Chess
Master the rules: Understand how the pieces move, how the game ends (checkmate, stalemate, etc.), and the basic tactics.
Understand basic opening principles: Develop your pieces, control the center, and make safe king moves (castling).
2. Study Tactics and Strategy
Tactical Training: Regularly practice tactical puzzles to sharpen your ability to spot forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, etc.
Learn Strategic Concepts: Study pawn structures, piece activity, weak squares, and other key strategic elements to improve your overall game.
3. Play Regularly
Play as much as possible: Regular practice, whether online or over-the-board, is essential. Aim to play against opponents who are slightly stronger than you to challenge yourself.
Analyze your games: Review your games (both wins and losses) to understand where you made mistakes and what you can improve.
4. Get Coaching or Mentorship
Work with a coach: A coach can help you identify weaknesses in your game and provide a roadmap for improvement. You can also learn advanced concepts and strategies that are crucial for higher levels of play.
Join a chess club: Engaging with a community of players can expose you to different styles and strategies.
5. Build Your Rating
Work towards achieving norms: To earn the GM title, you need to achieve three GM norms in tournaments. A norm is a high-level performance in a tournament against strong opposition.
Gain Elo rating points: The International Chess Federation (FIDE) requires a player to have a rating of 2500 or higher to become a GM. The norms and rating have to be achieved within specific conditions and tournaments recognized by FIDE.
6. Play in FIDE-Approved Tournaments
Participate in International Events: To gain norms and Elo points, you need to compete in FIDE-rated tournaments. The tournaments you play in must meet the criteria for GM norms (e.g., the right mix of opponents with strong ratings).
Focus on strong competition: Competing against stronger players will help you improve your own play and give you the opportunity to earn norms and gain rating points.
7. Achieve the Required Norms and Rating
Earn Three GM Norms: You need to score a GM-level performance in at least three tournaments. A GM norm is earned by performing at a GM level against other titled players.
Reach 2500 Elo: Once you've earned the necessary norms, you must achieve a 2500 Elo rating at some point in your career to be officially granted the title of Grandmaster.
8. Apply for the GM Title
Once you meet all the requirements (three norms and 2500 Elo), you can apply for the GM title with FIDE. The title is awarded once FIDE verifies your achievement.
Additional Tips:
Study Opening Theory: High-level players need to know a deep understanding of various openings and their variations.
Endgame Mastery: Grandmasters excel at endgames, so study basic and advanced endgames to convert advantages into wins.
Mental Toughness: Being a GM requires not only skill but also the ability to stay focused and maintain a high level of concentration during long games.
Becoming a GM takes years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Enjoy the journey and focus on continuous improvement!

What is 'En Passant'? It’s not an illegal pawn move!
Learn about the special pawn move that many new players mistake for a bug or illegal move!
Updated today
En passant
En passant (French for "in passing") is a special chess rule allowing pawns to capture a pawn that has just passed it.
This is not a bug or a hack but a legal chess move that has been part of the game for over 400 years and an official chess rule since 1880!
Check out this article to learn more about en passant: En Passant | Special Chess Moves
Example of en passant
In the example below, Black has just moved his pawn forward two spaces, landing alongside the white pawn. What many beginners don't realize is that White has the option to capture the black pawn as if it had only moved one square instead of two:
Do I have to capture en passant?
White doesn't have to capture in the scenario above, but if he doesn't, the option won't be available next turn.
Imagine it as if the black pawn is moving past the white pawn. In the moment while it is moving past, White has the chance to attack it, but only in that moment. Once the pawn has successfully moved past (the turn is over), it can't be attacked by en passant anymore!
When en passant is played you will see the 'i' icon next to the move in the moves list:
