Way to 1000-1. Making Plans
After years of playing casually, I’ve decided to take chess a bit more seriously. My goal? Reach a 1000 rating on Chess.com. For some, that might seem modest, but for me, it’s a meaningful milestone—a marker of improvement and love for the game.
This blog will document the journey: what I learn, what works (and what doesn’t), and how I overcome plateaus. I’ll be honest about setbacks and share insights that might help others on the same path.
Where I’m Starting
Right now, my rapid rating floats around 400-500, and I’ve noticed some consistent issues in my play: blunders, pressure, and endgame mistakes. I’m not starting from scratch, but I know I’ve got a lot to build up.
My Plan to Reach 1000
Here’s what I’ll be focusing on over the next few weeks:
-
Consistent Play (4-5 games per week)
No improvement happens without reps. I’ll play regularly, with a focus on rapid 15/10 to give myself time to think. -
Blunder Reduction
I’ll slow down and get into the habit of double-checking each move. Every time I lose a piece or miss a threat, I’ll review it and take notes. -
Basic Openings
I’m not going to memorize 20-move lines. I’ll learn 3-4 openings for white and a couple solid replies for black. The goal is to get through the opening phase safely. -
Puzzle Practice (daily)
I’ll solve 15-20 puzzles a day to improve tactical vision. I’ll focus especially on the Tactics I frequently meet . -
Game Review and Note-Taking
After every session, I’ll go over my games and keep a simple improvement log: what went wrong, what went right, and one takeaway per game.
What’s Next?
In my next post, I’ll share a breakdown of my current stats, a few annotated games, and my first week’s results. This journey won’t be perfect—but I’m committed to getting a little better every day.
Let’s go.
