The Modern Defense is played with e4. The line starts with 1. e4 g6. Preparing to Fianchetto. 2. d4 Bg5. Then 3. Nf3... This is the Modern Defense: Standard Line. You play d6, the Pirc Defense, preparing Nd7, supporting where the pawn attacks. Your Opponent plays some random developing move, then you play Nf6, preparing 0-0. After Your Opponent finishes development and you Fianchetto the other bishop. The point of these moves are to develop an attack on the center. You can also play c5 earlier in the game for a pawn break. Only do this after castling though.
If you're wondering what the picture under the words is in the title, it's a modern painting(yeah that's somehow art).
