🌟 Introduction: The Positional Assassin
While players like Tal and Fischer exploded across the board with fireworks, Anatoly Karpov was different.
He didn’t attack — he squeezed.
He didn’t sacrifice — he strangled.

Karpov is widely considered the greatest positional player of all time. He won with precision, patience, and psychology — often making his opponents feel completely helpless.

🧒 Early Life & Rise
🗓️ Born: May 23, 1951, Zlatoust, USSR
♟️ Became an International Master at 15, GM at 19
🧠 Trained in the Soviet system, mentored by Botvinnik’s school
🥇 World Champion from 1975–1985 (officially undisputed)

👑 World Champion by Default… but Proved Himself
In 1975, Fischer refused to defend his title — so Karpov was declared champion.
Critics said he didn’t “earn it”…
So Karpov crushed everyone — winning over 160 tournaments, the most in history!
He went on to defend the title multiple times, even surviving brutal matches with Viktor Korchnoi.

⚔️ Karpov vs Kasparov: The Chess Rivalry of the Century
1984–1990: They played 144 games across 5 world championship matches.
Kasparov was fire. Karpov was ice.
Karpov nearly defeated a young Kasparov in 1984 before the match was controversially halted.
Their styles were opposites — and their rivalry defined a generation.

🧠 Playing Style
🎯 Precision over aggression
🐍 Slowly squeezed small advantages into victories
♟️ Master of positional play, prophylaxis, and pawn structure
🧘 Calm, never emotional at the board
“I don’t believe in psychology. I believe in good moves.” – Karpov
“Tal would set traps. I would just make them suffer.”
