David Wei Liang Howell is an English chess grandmaster. He started playing chess at the age of five years and eight months, and soon received the attention of the Sussex Junior Chess Association. Howell became internationally famous when he broke the record for the youngest player to have ever defeated a grandmaster, defeating John Nunn at the age of eight. He still holds that record today.

Later, Howell came first at the European Youth Chess Championships in the U12 category, and defeated another grandmaster at the Hastings Challengers Tournament. In March 2002, Howell drew the last of four games against Vladimir Kramnik, becoming the youngest player in the world to score against a reigning champion.

Howell continued by gaining the international master title, and became a grandmaster at the age of sixteen, the youngest ever in the UK. Howell qualified for the grandmaster title on January 5th 2007, breaking Luke McShane's record by six months. After gaining the grandmaster title, Howell participated in a variety of tournaments.
