The boy in the picture above seems pretty confident. However, you may not feel so confident of you have made 3 types of big no-no's. Let's get started:
Type I : Positional Blunder
A positional blunder is a blunder that puts you in a worse position. Types of positional blunders:
- Moving you queen out too early
- Moving your f-pawn
- Moving your pawns too much
- Putting off castling
This example shows Bobby (white) against Nick (Black). Bobby tried the 4-move checkmate, however it did not go his way
The next example shows the danger of moving your f-pawn. The game lasted only 2 moves. Then, Kara (black) resigned
The third one shows Issac (white) get checkmated by the Fool's Mate because he moved his pawns too much.
The fourth one is a real game made by me. I was playing GreenAvenue(white). He had a rating of 1198.
Type II : Classic Blunders
A classic blunder is a blunder that loses material or checkmates you. Types of classic blunders:
- Losing a piece (even if it's indirectly)
- A blunder that makes your opponent win
- Missing a trick that makes your opponent win a piece
This example is another real game between me and my opponent. My opponent made a blunder that resulted in back-rank checkmate.
This example is a game between Sue (white) and Bobby (black). In this game, white lost a rook in the endgame. Check it out:
This last game is about winning the queen by deflection. In this game, Nick and Antony play a game which has a wild twist with a sacrifice that forces the opponent to lose the queen!
Type III : Missing a winning tactic
This type of blunder involves missing a winning tactic. They are not necessarily bad moves, they just miss a really good one. Here are a few types of this blunder:
- Missing an opportunity to capture a piece
- Missing checkmate
- Resigning in a winning position
Our first game comes from Nick and Neo. In this game, Neo had the opportunity to checkmate. Instead, he wasted his chance of another move!
Our second example shows a game between Bobby and Jon. In this game Bobby resigns in the endgame where he had the better position!
That's it for today folks! Stay tuned! I might make another blog right after this one.
