What Are FIDE Arena Titles, and How Can You Get Them?

When you think of chess titles, you probably imagine achievements like Grandmaster, International Master, or FIDE Master—earned in real-life tournaments. But did you know FIDE also offers online-only titles? These are called Arena Titles, and they’re earned through the official FIDE Online Arena platform.

I discovered Arena Titles as I searched for ways to get a taste of recognition in chess without attending OTB events. They’re real FIDE titles that show up on your profile, and for ambitious learners like us, they can be both a goal and a stepping stone toward bigger things.

What Are the Arena Titles?

Here are the four main Arena Titles, and what each means:

  • Arena Candidate Master (ACM) – A baseline online title.

  • Arena FIDE Master (AFM) – A step higher, reflecting improved online skill.

  • Arena International Master (AIM) – A prestigious mark of tactical and consistent strength online.

  • Arena Grandmaster (AGM) – The highest Arena Title, indicating serious online mastery.

These are separate from traditional over-the-board titles like CM, FM, IM, and GM—but they are recorded by FIDE and shown on your official profile. If you later earn a real OTB title, it will replace your Arena Title.

How Do You Earn an Arena Title?

To earn one, here's what you need to do:

  1. Become a PRO Member on FIDE Online Arena
Registering is free, but only PRO members can earn Arena Titles. Subscription costs are €6.99 per month or €49.99 per year.

  2. Meet and Maintain Rating Requirements
You must reach and sustain a certain rating for a specified number of consecutive games. The thresholds are:

Rating Required Rapid Games Blitz Games Bullet Games
    1100+ 50 100 150
    1400+ 50 100 150
    1700+ 50 100 150
    2000+ 50 100 150

If your rating falls below the threshold in that time control, your counter resets for that category. Over-the-board rating updates count once a month as one game.

  3. Claiming the Title
Once eligible, the system automatically notifies you. You pay a title fee, and the title is granted. Fees vary by title:

    • ACM: €5

    • AFM: €15

    • AIM: €30

    • AGM: €50

Once granted, the title is yours for life—even if your PRO subscription ends. Your FIDE profile and certificate get updated accordingly.

Why Aren’t They Equal to OTB Titles?

While they’re FIDE-recognized, Arena Titles aren’t the same prestige-wise as classical OTB titles. Some players see them as symbolic online milestones. As one user said on Reddit:

“The Arena Titles aren't really something, but I believe they aren't necessarily nothing. ... they work like an extended ladder encouraging improvers.”

But still, if you’re improving online, these titles can be motivating milestones—and they look official on your profile.

Final Thoughts

  • Arena Titles are official FIDE titles for online play, great for motivation and recognition—especially when over-the-board tournaments aren't accessible.

  • You need a PRO subscription (€6.99/month or €49.99/year), maintain the required ratings for consecutive games, and pay a one-time title fee.

  • Titles are permanent once issued, but they don’t carry the same prestige as classical OTB titles.
