The word 'Gambit' is used in everyday conversation to mean to attempt to do something with an element of trickery involved. In chess it means an oppeningin which pawn sacrifice is offered in order to gain an advantage. The opening called the Queen's Gambit is so named, not because it involves sacrificing a queen, but because a queenside pawn is offered to Black in order to speed up White's development.
