The Atheism Blog Part 1
Let's get a few things cleared up about atheism. Atheism is not as highly organized, and therefore visual, as a religious group. Therefore there tend to be some misconceptions. Here are a few common ones:
1) Atheism is a religion
Atheism is not a religion, it is the lack of one. You wouldn't say that 'no orange' is a type of orange, so someone who has 'no orange' therefore has an orange. It's the same with religion.
2) Atheists worship the devil
Atheism is not about worship. And if they don't beleive in God, they don't believe in his enemy, the devil, either.
3) Atheists are unhappy and angry
This might be true of some atheists, but it's also true of some religious people. It has nothing to do with religion, or lack of it.
4) Atheists have no morals
Atheists get their morals from the same place as religious people. No, not the holy books. They are very immoral indeed. Religious people do not follow the moral codes within their holy books, so they get their morals from somewhere else. That 'somewhere else' is the same place that atheists get theirs from.
5) Hitler and Stalin were atheists
Hitler was a Christian. Stalin was an atheist, but didn't kill people in the name of atheism. He did it for political and nationalist reasons.
