Why would anyone prefer a themed chess set over staunton?

For one, a themed set of chess pieces is indicative of the owner's tastes, personality, and interests. Even people who do not play chess get beautiful themed sets for display and to show sophistication. Another good reason is that themed sets are rare and can sometimes be considered unique in the sense that only a few of them are sold. The universality of Staunton chess sets makes it common and mundane. So long as Staunton sets exist, themed sets will also continue to evolve as a reaction.
