The rise of techno authoritarians
It was a time in which people lost faith in institutions. People believed that all politicians were as bad as each other. People just wanted a change. People thought the press was biased, that the courts were biased that the whole system was in need of a shake up.
And then along came a man.
He wasn’t polished. He wasn’t polite. He didn’t care about the rules of the game. He blamed the right people. He offered simple solutions. He had a funny little moustache.
People said, “Well, at least he’s different.”
They said, “He can’t be worse than the others.”
They said, “It’s just a protest vote.”
They said, “He’s not like the old guard.”
They weren’t voting for him. They were voting against everyone else.
And then they elected him.
The time was 1933.
